Preston Holcomb was born in Atlanta, GA, and raised in the metro suburb of Smyrna. He began drumming in 1976 at the age of 11, starting out on snare. At the age of 12, he got his first drum kit. He dove headlong into collecting albums of all different genres and began to teach himself to play by playing along to these records. By the age of 17, he helped to form his first band, a short-lived Christian rock outfit called Vision. At 19 he saw his first Grateful Dead show and quickly began his love for a more improvised style of music. In his early 20'ís he co-founded the long-running jam band The Grapes, touring and recording for many years with them. In the past 20 years, he has also been in several other bands including Wayside Riders, Revival - An Allman Brothers Experience, and the Lefty Williams Band. In late 2018 he was invited to play as percussionist for Blackberry Smoke and has since recorded and toured with them full-time. Preston uses Toca Custom Deluxe fiberglass congas and assorted Toca shakers and tambourines.
