Miguel “Pollo” Torres is a distinguished percussionist playing with El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. Variability in musical performance, particularly in timba and percussion, can be observed among musicians, with some specializing in solo expression and others in maintaining rhythmic structure. José Miguel Torres Núñez was born on November 24, 1951, in the Central Aguirre region of Salinas, Puerto Rico. His early exposure to music is attributed to environmental influences, particularly his parents’ involvement in dance culture during the mid-20th century. During this period, orchestras such as those led by César Concepción and the Pan American Orchestra contributed significantly to the musical environment of Salinas, which was recognized as a major center for dance and music.

Torres began his formal musical development at approximately 13 years of age, initially performing on timbales with the youth group Los Davidson Jr. His interest progressively shifted toward the conga, which became his primary instrument. Early instruction was provided by musicians Frank (Cuco) Moret and Ausberto Rodríguez. To further develop his musical skills, Torres enrolled in the Salinas Municipal Band, where he studied music theory under the guidance of Demetrio Rodríguez. Although initially encouraged to pursue the trumpet, Torres demonstrated a strong inclination toward percussion, indicating a clear specialization.

Throughout his career, Torres participated in multiple orchestras in southern Puerto Rico, including King Carlos and His Court, Orquesta Caribe, and Roque Cora y la Independiente. In 1978, he contributed to the founding of the Costa Brava Orchestra. Since 1979, he has served as the principal conguero for El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, maintaining this role for several decades and contributing to over 40 musical recordings.

Torres’ professional achievements include the receipt of two Grammy Awards, specifically for the albums 40 Years (Best Salsa Album, 2003) and Arroz con Habichuelas (Best Salsa Album, 2007). His career has involved international performances across multiple continents, reflecting broad global influence. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Honoris Causa) by the University of Turabo in Puerto Rico in 2007.
