Doug Hinrichs Demonstrates a Rhythmic
Technique from Guadalupe and Trinidad
In this video lesson, Doug Hinrichs demonstrates a
shaker technique that he learned while studying gwoka and sacred music
in Guadalupe and Trinidad. This traditional rhythm puts the downbeat
towards you rather than away from you. This may seem really simple but
by using this rhythmic method you will get a good funky bend and it will
help you to get up on the second sixteenth note, which is neglected in
contemporary music. Doug is using the Natural
Shaker that he created for Toca.
Doug Hinrichs is a NYC based percussionist who is currently
playing full time with the show, In the Heights. Apart from his work
on Broadway, Doug has done many session and gigs in a wide variety of
musical styles.
